Managing money is an important activity in order to maintain our sense of autonomy and well-being.  Management of finances by family, friends or professionals may be necessary due to declines in capability but may also be a choice, even in the presence of full capacity.  Independence can be threatened if any attempts are made to assist the asset owner with financial issues without asking their permission.

Everyone likes to have choices.  For some this may mean the choice to have no further choices.  For most, there is some level of involvement that they want in decisions affecting them.  This also includes financial decisions.  Never assume that someone experiencing cognitive decline has no interest in their finances.  Also never assume that a change in living arrangements means an automatic change in financial management arrangements.

How would you intervene if you observed your parent encountering financial difficulty?
